POKOTABI / Furaibo
風来房
Located in Nagaokakyo, Kyoto Prefecture, Furaibo specialises in tsuke tantanmen, offering distinctive varieties such as the signature Byakko alongside Genbu, Suzaku, and Ouryuu, with hot or chilled noodles and table dashi broth to finish.
01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
In Nagaokakyo, Kyoto, Furaibo dedicates its menu to tsuke tantanmen—ramen noodles dipped into a concentrated spicy sesame soup. Anchoring the selection is Byakko, the shop's standard style. Its dipping broth combines the rounded richness of sesame and peanuts with an agreeable heat, anchored by an aromatic dashi of bonito and kelp that leaves a lingering savoury depth. Diners can select either warm or chilled noodles; opting for cold noodles highlights their firm, springy chew, while warm noodles blend seamlessly with the hot broth from the very first dip.
A major draw of the shop is its lineup named after the Four Symbols of Chinese astronomy, each bowl offering a distinct twist. Genbu puts aromatic roasted black sesame at the forefront; Suzaku stimulates the appetite with a sharp harmony of sourness and chili heat; Ouryuu infuses the broth with curry spices; and Houou delivers a hearty, well-balanced kick. Sunk at the bottom of the rich dipping bowls are tender dice of chashu pork and savoury seasoned minced meat, which cling to the noodles as you drag them through, adding layered texture and substance to every mouthful.
Finishing the meal has its own ritual. Pitchers of dashi stock rest on the counter, allowing diners to dilute the remaining sauce into a soothing, sip-ready soup to savour until the bowl is clean. Those with larger appetites can add extra noodles or order a subsequent serving of kaedama. Alternatively, stirring a side of steamed rice or seasoned meat miso rice into the leftover broth transforms the remainder into a comforting, savoury porridge.
Seating is arranged predominantly around a counter, and orders are placed using a cash-only ticket vending machine near the door. With a free car park situated behind the building, the shop draws a steady stream of diners throughout lunch and dinner hours.
